Clara's First 100 Words

It took just over four months from one word to 100.  The theme was "food," from "yogurt" to "cinnamon."

At the risk of comparing my children, I think it's fascinating that though they said their first words at very different ages (17 months and 14 months respectively), it took them nearly the exact same amount of time to get to 100.

Andrew is looking at the map and saying 'Which one is Avo-cado?'.... I'm pretty sure he'll be looking in the kitchen for Color-ado later.

Rain and yoga

Overheard this afternoon -

Mama: Listen! Can you hear the rain?
Andrew: Yes! It sounds like music.

Also we had our first successful family yoga session this evening (there have been several unsuccessful attempts).  Andrew and I did a sun salutation, a warrior II, and triangle pose on both sides.  The kid does a great triangle pose, let me tell you.

Clara just wanted to walk underneath me during down dog.

...and One More

When I got home from work today, Andrew was pulling the large wheeled cooler around the living room.

Mama: What do you have there, Andrew?
Andrew: Picnic suitcase.  [Pronounced "Nic-nic suitcase."]

Totally deadpan.  Cooler = picnic suitcase.  Well, of course.

Conversations with Andrew

Mama (to Maggie): I'll have to talk to Travis about it.
Andrew: Travis come back home?
Mama: Do you know who Travis is?  What is Travis's other name?
Andrew: Daddy!
Mama: That's right!  What's my name?
Andrew: Mama.
Mama: Very good.  What's my other name?
Andrew: Mommy.

~~~
Andrew (happening across my Juno coffee mug on the table): Oh, Juno!
Daddy: What's Juno, Andrew?
Andrew: Spacecraft!
Daddy: That's right!  Where is Juno going?
Andrew: The airport.
~~~

Mama: What have you got there, Andrew?
Andrew: Key.  Magic key.
Mama: What does it do?
Andrew (closes his fist and inserts key into it.  turns key. opens fist): Open! (closes fist) Closed!

747

Amy said, and I quote, "I'm going to get a 5x7 made of that picture for our wall of our family in front of the 747." And Andrew instantly started yelling: plane, Plane, PLANE, PLANE!!!

Andrew's First 100 Words

So here's a milestone.  It took about 4 months to get here, I think.  Some of these words are what you might expect.  Some are pretty funny, I think.  The ones without dates have uncertain dates of appearance, but it was mostly in this order.

Eggs

Andrew pronounced the word "egg" mostly correctly.  I feel the need to document this.

Andrew has gotten eggs for breakfast almost every morning since he was about 10 months old.  "Egg" was his 10th word (10/26/12), but he said it with this guttural, wet "gggghhhh" sound in the back of his throat.  (I sort of wish now I had a recording of it, because I can't replicate it myself.)

This morning, he was cooking in his play kitchen, and I said, "Hey Andrew, whatcha makin'?"  He replied, "Gggghhh" - eggs.  Always eggs.

Then this afternoon, he woke up from his nap and brought me a book about the farm to read.  He pointed at the egg on the cover and said very clearly, "egg."  (Well, more like "ogg" actually, but considering where we've been....)  So.. that's it.  I thought he would say "gggghhh" until he went to college, but nope.  My little egg-eater is growing up.

This feels like a big deal for some reason.

Some Andrew Stuff

About two weeks ago, we finished up the 18-month sleep regression.  (At least, I hope it was the 18 month sleep regression, because if we have another 6 week period of non-sleep and screaming in the near future, I might have to quit my job.)  But as Frans Plooij can tell you, after regression comes a leap.  And this weekend I am seeing Andrew think with a whole new level of complexity, it's really incredible

Today in the bath, I unplugged the drain and told him that when the water was gone, it was time to get out.  He looked at the drain, looked at me, and then re-plugged the drain.  When I unplugged the drain again, he tried to turn on the faucet to run more water in the tub.  Creative!

We bought some new snow boots, in celebration of the first real snow of the year:
Andrew brings them to me and wants to wear them around the house.  He's brought shoes before, when he wants to go outside.  But this somehow seems different, like he's really attached to these boots.  Like he thinks they are really cool.

Today, we made snickerdoodles.  I rolled the dough into balls and handed them to him, and he coated them with cinnamon and sugar.  He experimented with many different ways of doing this.  First, he rolled them in the bowl, like I showed him.  Next he let the dough ball sit in the bowl and sprinkled the mixture over them with a spoon.  Then he put the dough ball in the spoon and tossed it up in the air, like he was throwing a pizza.  Near the end he pressed the ball into the mixture, changing its shape.

He has done experimentation before, but this seemed more creative, more varied, and more consistently effective than in the past.  It was pretty fascinating.  Also, he stayed on task incredibly well.  He complained if I didn't hand him new dough balls fast enough, and wanted to "trade" me when he felt he had them sufficiently coated.

After his regression, he's back to giving hugs and kisses, and seems to give them more liberally than before.  He's always keeping an eye out for his sister.  He likes to wake her up from naps, helps to feed her (when mommy's not around and she gets a bottle), and always says "hello" to her when he wakes up from sleep.  He actually asks to have a bath with her - they both go in the baby tub together, and she kicks his chest the whole time - which is the cutest thing.

He's getting more words, and he's using the words he has more often and with more precision.  His new words this weekend are "egg" (favorite breakfast item) and "shh" (used specifically to indicate quiet or to calm Clara down).  His favorite words are "up" (to be picked up, to stand at the kitchen counter and help cook, to go upstairs), "yuck" (for the trash can, the diaper pail, anything with a weird texture, and just because he likes the sound of the word), and "done" (which he alternates with the "all done" sign).  By my count he has about 16 words, although a handful of those are animal sounds, which may or may not actually count.

He'll be 18 months old tomorrow, my little man.

Auf Deutsch

Andrew has a counting book that he likes to read over and over and over again.  This becomes rather boring for the adults, so we've been counting in different languages: French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian. (Note to self: need to learn to count in some Asian languages, beyond "Ichi, Ni, San...")

Today we did German.  Apparently "fünf" is the funniest word in the world.  Now Andrew is running around the house saying "fünf fünf fünf" and giggling.

The kid has, like, two words in English, and now he's speaking German.
